My Review:
Guard Your Heart is a YA contemporary story set in present day Northern Ireland. This book focuses on the conflicts of the two opposing sides that still exist today in Northern Ireland. Guard Your Heart is about Iona and Aidan who come from different backgrounds and despite their differences end up wanting to be in a relationship together.
Guard Your Heart talks in depth about the impact of Northern Ireland’s history on the younger generation and it really highlights the unrest that is still very much present in Northern Ireland’s current society while at the same time the book still holds a hopeful message.
I liked the first half of the book considerably more than the second half. I liked finding out about the characters and liked the blossoming romance between them. I thought the second half really ramped up some unnecessary drama with the story and threw off the pacing of the book. The second half of the book felt very rushed with the romance just kind of squeezed in at the end.
Overall I thought Guard Your Heart was an interesting read, it wasn’t as light hearted as it first seemed as it deals with some hard topics like sectarianism and its impact on people. I enjoyed the first half of the book but didn’t really care for the second half as there was too much drama.
I love the idea of this book, especially the themes it tackled. Sadly there are parts that you didn’t like. I still might read this because I want to know more about Northern Ireland. 🙂
