July Wrap Up 2021

What I Read In July:

monstrous desing final revival of opal and nev the midnight lie blood be damned

Monstrous Design (Battalion of the Dead #2) by Kat Dunn – 3 STARS

I enjoyed Monstrous Design and I like the atmosphere of this series but I didn’t like how the characters were separated for most of this book, I felt that threw off the pacing of the story a bit so I like this book less than the first but I still found it to be an enjoyable read and I was intrigued by the plot of it.

The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton – 4 STARS

I really liked this book and loved finding out all about this fictional band through an interview format and seeing how each member of the band had different experiences with their rise to fame and what they went through to get there. This is one of those books that is so uniquely told that the characters and the music feel so real that it makes you want to learn more about them but obviously you can’t because they are fictional.

The Midnight Lie (The Midnight Lie #1) by Marie Rutkoski – 3 STARS

I enjoyed this book but I didn’t love it like I hoped I would. I didn’t like the world building and I felt a bit confused as to the characters own thoughts of the world, it’s hard to pin point why exactly but the world and the way the characters described it just didn’t mesh with me. Despite that though I thought the storyline was entertaining.

Blood be Damned (Demons of New Chicago #3) by Kel Carpenter – 3 STARS

I like the relationships between the characters in this series. I like Piper and Natalie’s friendship and I like the romance between Piper and Ronan but I didn’t like the surprise near the end of this book. It’s a trope (I don’t know if you’d call it a trope but it is a sort of spoiler so I won’t say exactly what it is) that happens in a lot of books that don’t really need it and I felt this book didn’t really need it.

leviathan wakes the blood is love1 this poison heart

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse #1) by James S.A. Corey – 5 STARS

I watched the tv series of The Expanse last year and loved it so much that I just had to read the books too. I loved Leviathan Wakes and I can now see how well the tv series was adapted, the overall world/universe is so intriguing and complex that it really sucks you in.

The Blood Is Love (Dark Eyes #2) by Karina Halle – 3 STARS

I thought this book was okay but I don’t think this sequel was much needed. I felt like the relationship that was established in the first book went back and forth on the same things that the characters had already discussed in the first book so it made the characters seem kind of annoying to me but I was still interested in the plot so it ended up being an okay read.

This Poison Heart (This Poison Heart #1) by Kalynn Bayron – 3 STARS

I was very excited for this book to be released but I ended up being disappointed by it. I still enjoyed the book, it was atmospheric and intriguing and I liked the descriptions of the greenery and Briseis powers but I thought the plot was just too convenient and there was a lot of telling and not showing within the story.

all systems red artificial condition rogue protocol

All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) by Martha Wells – 4 STARS
Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) by Martha Wells – 4 STARS
Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries #3) by Martha Wells – 4 STARS

I’ve really enjoyed the first three books in The Murderbot Diaries series so far and I love reading about Murderbot, they are such a relatable character. I like that so far each book has had different characters interact with Murderbot but the overall plot is still all very much connected and very intriguing. I really like this series and can’t wait to read more of Murderbot.
