Book Covers That Have A Spooky Aesthetic

There are a lot of spooky looking book covers out there and since Halloween is nearly upon us I thought I’d do a post showing some book covers that I think have a spooky aesthetic to them. There are quite a few spooky book covers but I narrowed it down to six and these are books I’ve already read.

Book Recommendations for the Halloween Season

Since Halloween is creeping closer, I thought now would be a good time to talk about some spooky books that I’d recommend for you to read if you want to feel those Halloween vibes. I’m not a big horror reader myself so most of these books are not ‘scary’ scary but I do think they all match the spooky season somehow. I’ve put the books into sub categories, if you’re looking for a specific vibe. So let’s get onto the book recs!

Gothic books:

a dowry of blood ttt

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson – This is a reimagining of Dracula’s brides and it has such a gothic atmosphere that makes it a perfect Halloween read.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield – This is a mystery that is not spooky as such but has definitely a gothic feeling to it.

Graphic novels:

Beetle and the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne – Beetle and the Hollowbones is such a cute graphic novel about a goblin witch named beetle and her ghost friend.

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll – Through the Woods has five separate stories in it and all are very spooky, the artwork is very creepy too.

Atmospheric historical fantasy books:

Dangerous Remedy (Battalion of the Dead #1) by Kat Dunn – Dangerous Remedy has a dark atmosphere to it as it’s about a group of characters who save people from the guillotine.

The Diviners (The Diviners #1) by Libba Bray – The Diviners is definitely one of the most atmospheric book series I’ve ever read and the way the author describes what happens in it is so eerie and spooky.

Paranormal books:

tgc1 black sunshine

Three Mages and a Margarita (The Guild Codex: Spellbound #1) by Annette Marie – There is mages, witches, vampires and demons in these books and I really enjoy the atmosphere of them.

Black Sunshine (Dark Eyes #1) by Karina Halle – This is a vampire book that has a bit more of a darker feel to it.

Scary heart pounding books:

tp itdd

The Passage (The Passage #1) by Justin Cronin – This is a post apocalyptic series about vampire like zombies. These books have such heart pounding scenes in them.

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant – Again this is another adrenaline rush book but this is about killer mermaids and about a crew of people that go to investigate them.

Have you read any of these books? What book recommendations do you have for the Halloween season?

My Spooky October TBR 2021

Halloween is nearly here so I thought it was time to show you all the books I plan on reading this month. I love picking out spooky books to read every Halloween.  There are always so many books to choose from, I’ll probably not get to all of them.  Some of these books are not very spooky but more autumnal or paranormal but I think that still counts as a ‘spooky book’.

My October TBR:

cemetery boys crave mina and the undead once and future witches frankenstein

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Crave (Crave #1) by Tracy Wolff

Mina and the Undead (Mina and the Undead #1) by Amy McCaw

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

squad the whispering dead love bites payback a witch night world

The Whispering Dead (Gravekeeper #1) by Darcy Coates

Love Bites (Love Bites #1) by Ry Herman

Payback’s a Witch (The Witches of Thistle Grove #1) by Lana Harper

October is the time for all the spooky books so I thought I’d recommend you some books that I think would be great to read at this time of year. These books have different kinds of spookiness to them, some have a creepy atmosphere, some are scary and some are just books that I thought have an autumnal feeling about them.

My October 2020 TBR

october 2020 tbr pic 01

I don’t normally do monthly tbrs but I always do a tbr for October because I like to show some of the spooky books I plan on reading and these are the ones I’d like to read this year. There are some books on this list that are not actually ‘scary’ but I do think they all sound like they’d be good to read this month.

Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne

I recently saw this graphic novel going around and it looked like the perfect read for October so I’m very excited to get to it.

Damned Souls and a Sangria (The Guild Codex: Spelbound #8) by Annette Marie

This is the last book in the Guild Codex: Spellbound series and I’m going to be sad that it’s over. This series has been so fun to read and I’m glad I still have the spin offs.

Night Scourge (Daybreaker #2) by Pippa DaCosta

It took me a while to warm up to the first book in this series but I did enjoy it by the end of it but I’m hoping I’ll get quicker into the story of the second book and enjoy it more than the first book.

Hold Back the Tide by Melinda Salisbury

I love Melinda Salisbury’s Sorrow duology so I’ve been excited for this book since it was announced and I was going to read it when it first came out but I seen some reviews saying how creepy and scary it was so I decided to keep it for this month.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

This is described as having gothic ghostly vibes, I don’t know if there are ghosts in it or maybe it’s just the atmosphere but either way it does sound like a good read for this month.

The Wonkiest Witch by Jeannie Wycherley

I didn’t know there was an actual genre called cosy mystery until fairly recently and as soon as I did I knew I wanted to read a book in that genre for October. I don’t know much about this book but it does sound like the perfect read for October.

Do you read spooky themed books in October?
